Why molecular storage beats conventional BESS for long-duration solar backup: our 5 MW HPDD configuration for India.
In fast-growing renewable markets like India, developers are deploying utility-scale solar at an unprecedented pace. The defining challenge begins when the sun sets: dispatching a firm 4 to 5 MW baseload throughout non-solar hours.
Conventional battery energy storage systems (Li-ion BESS) face a brutal economic ceiling: scaling storage duration from 4 hours to 10+ hours requires a strictly linear addition of battery cells, raw materials, and massive CAPEX replacement cycles.
Our solution: HPDD-BESS (Hydro Puls Direct-Drive).
How the architecture operates:
• Daytime (Surplus Solar & Curtailment Mitigation): Excess midday generation is captured on-site to synthesize liquid green ammonia (NH₃). The HPDD platform provides the precision-metered nitrogen and ultra-pure water feedstocks directly to the synthesis reactor.
• Nighttime (4–5 MW Dispatchable Baseload): During non-solar hours, the system seamlessly pivots. The HPDD utilizes stored ammonia to deliver continuous, dispatchable mechanical/electrical power between 4 and 5 MW back to the grid or local industrial off-takers.
The Economic Advantage over Conventional BESS:
In standard electrochemical batteries, power (MW) and energy capacity (MWh) are intrinsically tied—every additional hour of backup multiplies battery pack CAPEX.
With HPDD, power and energy capacity are completely decoupled. Delivering 8, 12, or 24 hours of firm 5 MW backup simply requires adding low-pressure liquid ammonia tank volume. The 5 MW HPDD conversion core remains identical in size, footprint, and cost.
Key Highlights:
1. Drastically lower levelized cost of storage (LCOS) for long durations (LDES).
2. Zero cell degradation over thousands of high-temperature cycling operations.
3. 100% oil-free operation under an ironclad closed mass balance (ΔMass = 0.000 kg).
A bankable, scalable blueprint for solar grid firming and energy sovereignty across emerging markets.
