Wet biomass to diesel

From 144 tons of wet biomass to 6,000 liters of diesel equivalent per day: Why SCWG + HPDD outperforms traditional biogas.

During a recent engineering exchange with Srivathsan R, we evaluated a fundamental mass-energy balance: what is the actual fuel replacement yield of a continuous 144 t/d wet biomass stream (85% moisture) when targeting direct diesel substitution?

The baseline numbers:
• Feedstock: 144 t/d wet biomass at 85% moisture (122.4 t water, 21.6 t dry solids).
• Methane Yield (SCWG): ~4,000 to 4,600 kg pure CH4 (~5,500 to 6,400 Nm³).
• Net Energy (LHV): ~215,000 MJ per daily batch.
• Diesel Equivalent: ~5,800 to 6,200 liters of diesel per day (rule of thumb: 1 kg of biomethane replaces ~1.38 liters of diesel).

The Traditional Biogas Bottleneck:
To replace diesel in heavy equipment, tractors, or transport fleets, biomethane must be stored as Bio-CNG at 200–250 bar. Conventional anaerobic digesters operate at near-atmospheric pressure, requiring heavy, multi-stage electric gas compressors that consume significant power, incur high CAPEX, and demand frequent maintenance.

How Supercritical Water Gasification (SCWG) + HPDD Solves It:
1. Gasification Above the Critical Point (>250 bar): SCWG processes wet biomass thermochemically under high pressure. The methane leaves the reactor directly at 200–250 bar—ready for storage cascades and vehicle dispensing without multi-stage gas compressors.
2. Volumetric Slurry Pumping: The primary mechanical duty shifts to feeding the abrasive, high-solids slurry into the reactor at >250 bar. The Hydro Puls Direct-Drive (HPDD) platform delivers this positive displacement without high-speed rotating seals or valve erosion.
3. In-Situ CO2 Mineralization: Combining effluent CO2 with industrial gypsum streams creates precipitated calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and ammonium sulfate, simultaneously sweetening the methane into high-purity motor fuel.

No subsidies, no public grant dependence—just direct thermodynamic integration and immediate on-site diesel cost reduction.

Thanks to Srivathsan R for driving these focused calculations!
