Why does the heavy energy and process industry still believe that economies of scale can only be achieved by building monstrous, centralized megaprojects?
The aerospace sector fell into the exact same trap for decades.
During the Apollo era, NASA built the iconic Saturn V: five gargantuan, hand-crafted F-1 engines. Incredible engineering, but astronomical in cost, fragile in operational flexibility, and entirely bespoke.
Now look at SpaceX. For Starship, Elon Musk explicitly avoided a handful of giant engines and chose 33 identical, compact Raptor engines instead.
Why? Because the true law of industrial scaling does not happen on a construction site, it happens on an automated assembly line:
* Product Manufacturing vs. Project Engineering: Constructing a massive, custom plant on-site guarantees unpredictable schedule slips, soaring failure costs, and bureaucratic friction. Rolling identical, modular units off a factory line drives predictable margins, steep learning curves, and constant quality control.
* Inherent Modular Redundancy: When a critical sub-system trips in a single giant monolithic plant, the entire facility shuts down for weeks or months. In a cluster of standardized modules, taking one offline for maintenance leaves the remaining units operating at full capacity.
* Point-of-Origin Integration: Instead of hauling massive feedstock flows across hundreds of kilometers of overstressed transit corridors to feed a centralized smokestack, standardized containerized modules deploy directly at the source, regional logistics hubs, agricultural cooperatives, or industrial parks.
This is the exact philosophy underpinning the Hydro Puls Direct-Drive (HPDD) architecture.
